🎨 How to color it

Layer the rainbow bands in crimson, amber, golden yellow, emerald, sky blue, indigo, and violet, with blush-pink roses, sage leaves, and a soft pewter gate. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow vine curls and rose petals, then switch to smooth, even strokes along each long rainbow band. For a luminous Art Nouveau effect, deepen the flowers at their centers and let the rainbow fade slightly where the vines cross it.

The story behind this coloring page

The Key That Waited — Every evening, after the visitors left, Isolde polished the small brass key on her sleeve and hung it beside the locked rose gate in the glass conservatory. Read the full story →

Every evening, after the visitors left, Isolde polished the small brass key on her sleeve and hung it beside the locked rose gate in the glass conservatory. It opened nothing anyone could find, yet it had been in her pocket since her first day there, warm as a held breath and smelling faintly of rain on stone.

Then one day, a colorless rainbow appeared under the roof after a storm, pale as milk in the high panes. Because of that, Isolde stayed past midnight, listening to water tick from leaf to leaf. Because of that, she saw the roses turn their faces not toward the moon, but toward the key.

At last she set it in the gate’s empty latch. No hinge moved; instead, the rainbow filled slowly, band by patient band, and the roses opened with the soft sound of silk being unfolded. Isolde did not step through. She only hung the key back in its place, warm as a held breath.
