Every evening, Bren held his tiny challenge on the mosaic counter: while the kiwi suns prickled green and the watermelon wedges flashed red, he stayed plain until the clock hummed midnight. One day, a crumb of blue sugar bounced from a pastry box and landed in his rind with a cold little ping. Because of that, Bren turned half lime, half sky, and tried to hide behind a triangular melon.
