🎨 How to color it

Try ruby red on the watermelon flesh, emerald green for the kiwi rings, sunny orange and lemon yellow on the citrus wheels, and deep black seeds. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin citrus segments and kiwi rays, turning the page as you work around each circular slice. For a mischievous twist, make one citrus wheel a blue-lime gradient so it looks like it snuck in from another fruit bowl.

Bren’s Blue-Lime Dare — Every evening, Bren held his tiny challenge on the mosaic counter: while the kiwi suns prickled green and the watermelon wedges flashed red, he stayed plain until the clock hummed midnight. Read the full story →

Every evening, Bren held his tiny challenge on the mosaic counter: while the kiwi suns prickled green and the watermelon wedges flashed red, he stayed plain until the clock hummed midnight. One day, a crumb of blue sugar bounced from a pastry box and landed in his rind with a cold little ping. Because of that, Bren turned half lime, half sky, and tried to hide behind a triangular melon. Because of that, the melon laughed so hard its seeds rattled, and the sound ran through every citrus spoke like spoons in a drawer. Finally, Bren quit hiding and rolled his impossible color into the open; joy tasted bigger when everyone got a slice.
