🎨 How to color it

Color the knight’s armor silver, the lion flag royal blue with a gold lion, and the wooden gate warm brown against soft green hills. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big gate planks and roofs, then add just a few darker lines in the wood grain if your child wants. Try making the road pale tan near the knight and a little cooler gray as it curves back toward the tiny village houses.

Before the bell rang at Pinebarrow Gate, Paxon tucked three oat cakes beside the road stone. He wanted the forest scouts to find breakfast before their long march. The wooden gate smelled like sun-warmed pine, and his spear went tap-tap on the dust while the blue lion flag snapped overhead.

Soon, small feet pattered on the bend. Four goblins trotted up with spears, shields, and rumbling bellies, humming a marching song that sounded like pots going clink-clank. Paxon lifted his visor. “Those cakes are for anyone on the road,” he called.

The goblins froze, then bowed so low their ears nearly swept the pebbles. One left a shiny river shell where the cakes had been. By noon, the scouts found the shell and followed its gleam to a hidden spring. If you trace the winding road past Paxon’s boots, can you spot where a secret thank-you might roll next?
