Across the spring meadow, Perrin raced with a tin whistle bouncing against his shirt, ready to blow the first cheer when the rainbow touched both hedges. Wet grass snapped at his ankles, tulips brushed his knees, and bees stitched busy loops through the daisy tops. He counted the colors aloud as he ran: red, orange, yellow—faster, faster, faster.
More children tumbled after him with ribbon sticks and flower crowns, making the meadow fizz with shouts. The decorated eggs waited in the grass like tiny lanterns, striped, dotted, swirled, and zigzagged. Perrin leaped over a blue one, skidded past a daffodil, and lifted his whistle to begin the cheer.
Before he could blow, a speckled egg near his shoe answered: tweet-tee-tweet! Perrin froze. The meadow froze too. Then every hidden egg gave back a different note—plinks, trills, hums, and pearly little chimes—until the rainbow seemed to be holding up a bridge made of music.
Perrin laughed so hard he had to share it twice. “Everybody sing with the eggs!” he shouted, and the whole meadow burst open with voices, whistles, and flower-sweet wind. If you follow the rainbow down into the patterned eggs, can you guess which one sang back first?
