🎨 How to color it

Color the elephant soft slate gray, the leafy tree in two mossy greens, the wooden fence warm tan, and the hanging hay basket golden straw. Use sharp colored pencils for the trunk wrinkles, bark lines, and layered leaves, then switch to broader strokes on the elephant’s ears and body. Try making the tiny spiral snack a bright apricot so the elephant’s curved trunk leads your eye right to it.

Behind the low rails, Nello could hear the hay basket creak in the night breeze. He had set himself a dare: carry one sweet curl of dried pumpkin from his supper dish to the far grass clump without tasting it, not even once. The path smelled of bark dust and warm straw. He stepped past the old tree, where leaves clicked softly like tiny teeth.

Halfway there, his tusk bumped the fence post. Clonk! A beetle vanished under a stone, and the pumpkin curl nearly slipped from his trunk. Nello’s mouth watered. Instead, he tucked the treat beside the spiky grass and whispered, “For whoever is hungrier than me.” No keeper saw. No friend trumpeted. Only the hanging basket swayed.

At dawn, the pumpkin was gone, and in its place lay one perfect round snail shell, striped like a secret. Nello touched it gently and smelled rain on the grass. His dare had not brought him a snack; it had brought him a visitor. If you follow his trunk next time, you might spot the tiny curl that began behind the low rails.
