Fun facts to share while coloring

Cats use their whiskers like sensitive measuring tools; the whiskers help them judge narrow spaces and notice tiny movements in the air. Most cats can retract their claws, keeping them sharp for climbing and gripping. A cat’s purr often happens when it feels comfortable, but cats may also purr when they are stressed or healing. Domestic cats are closely related to wildcats from the Near East, and people began living alongside them thousands of years ago as stored grain attracted mice. Cats spend a lot of time grooming because their rough tongues help clean fur, spread natural oils, and remove loose hair.

Coloring tips

For a classic cat palette, try warm orange for ginger cats, sandy tan and dark brown for tabby stripes, smoky gray for Russian-blue-style coats, deep black with blue highlights, creamy white patches, pink noses and inner ears, and green, gold, or blue eyes. Use short, light pencil strokes in the direction the fur grows, especially around cheeks, tails, and paws; then darken stripes, spots, and the line down the back. Leave whiskers white by coloring around them or adding them last with a white gel pen. For a fun twist, turn one page into a “cat café” scene by coloring each collar tag a different color and adding tiny paw-print wallpaper behind the cats.
