🎨 How to color it

Color the tabby cat in soft gray and cream stripes, the pumpkins in harvest orange, the corn leaves in olive green, and the hay bale in golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the cat’s fur lines, pumpkin ribs, corn kernels, and straw marks so the small textures stay crisp. Try a pale blue sky with peach-tinted clouds to make the warm pumpkins and hay feel extra cozy.

Between the hay bales, Thistle kept one paw on the empty nail where the porch bell should have hung. The market would open at sunset, and without its bright clink, no one would know when the cider was ready. A dry whisper slid through the pumpkin leaves—scritch, scritch—and a crow with one silver feather hopped from the corn.

“Your bell is answering,” the crow said, and vanished between the stalks. Thistle left her warm bale, squeezing past prickly vines and damp pumpkin stems that smelled of earth and sugar. Burrs caught in her tail. Corn leaves ticked against her whiskers like tiny clocks. At the field’s edge, she found the bell tied to a tassel, ringing whenever the wind came through a narrow gap in the fence.

Thistle tugged it free, but the gap hummed after the bell went still. Hidden inside was a path just wide enough for paws, leading back to the bale by a shorter, secret way. She returned with burrs, the bell, and a map in her whiskers. Next time you see the corn behind her, can you find the door that whispered scritch, scritch?
