Under Thorn Ridge, Kest carried a tiny shell whistle in his claw, though everyone called it only a pebble with a hole. He wanted to find the place where its thin note belonged. Each time he blew, the sound slipped away—whee-oo—stolen by the cliff wind, leaving the smell of hot stone and fern dust behind.
At sunset, a pterodactyl circled low, silent as a torn cloud. Kest climbed after it, claws clicking on loose rock, until he reached a crack shaped like the whistle’s mouth. “Is this yours?” he whispered. He set the shell inside. The wind rushed through, not lost now, but gathered, ringing clear across every ledge.
The pterodactyl answered with one bright cry, and the whole ridge hummed back. Ever since, Thorn Ridge sings before storms, calling flyers home and telling walkers they are exactly where they belong. Next time you spot Kest looking up, see if you can find the secret place where the whee-oo began.
