🎨 How to color it

Color the monkey golden brown with a cream face and belly, the bananas bright yellow, the thick branches warm tan, and the palm and monstera leaves in deep jungle greens. Use sharp colored pencils for the skinny palm fronds and leaf cuts, then switch to broader marker strokes on the monkey’s body and the open branch shapes. Try a sunny-to-lime green gradient on the big leaves so the falling bananas look like flashes of gold in motion.

From the first warm rustle of morning, Nico raced the high jungle paths, tapping each branch with his palms and letting his curled tail steer him through the green. He wanted to find the quickest way from the breadfruit crown to the river lookout before the noon cicadas began their buzzing chorus. Leaves brushed his cheeks, bark felt dry and ridged under his fingers, and ripe bananas gave the air a sweet, sunny smell.

He swung past fan palms, flipped under a smooth limb, and laughed when three bananas bounced free and tumbled beside him. “Keep up!” he called to them, as if fruit could join a race. The jungle answered with snaps, swishes, and the thump-thump of his own feet pushing off wood.

Then a red-and-blue parrot drifted upside down beside him, holding a strip of pale bark in one claw. On it were little scratches shaped like branches, loops, and fruit stems. “You’re not racing,” the parrot said. “You’re drawing the missing road.”

Nico looked back. His leaps had shaken loose bananas exactly where the old paths met, bright markers swinging in the air. The parrot added one final curl to the bark-map, and Nico sprang onward, not ahead of the jungle, not behind it, but woven right through it. If you follow the falling bananas with your eyes, you may find the skyway Nico felt beneath his palms.
