Fun facts to share while coloring

Dolphins are mammals, not fish, so they breathe air through a blowhole on top of the head and must surface regularly. Many dolphins live in social groups called pods, where they travel, hunt, and communicate with clicks and whistles. They use echolocation by sending out sound clicks and listening for echoes, which helps them find fish and understand what is around them in cloudy water. A baby dolphin is called a calf, and it nurses milk from its mother. Bottlenose dolphins, one of the best-known species, can be found in warm and temperate seas around the world.

Coloring tips

For a classic dolphin palette, use blue-gray or slate gray on the back, a lighter silver-gray belly, charcoal for the eye, soft pink inside the mouth, and turquoise, deep blue, and seafoam green for the water. Dolphins have long, smooth shapes, so try shading in gentle bands from the top of the body down to the belly instead of using harsh stripes. Leave a thin white highlight along the forehead, back, and flipper to make the skin look wet. For a dolphin-specific twist, add pale echo rings in front of the dolphin’s mouth, a sparkling splash around a leap, or sunset colors reflected on the waves.
