🎨 How to color it

Color the dolphins in sleek blue-gray, the splash bursts in bright aqua, the wave lines in deep teal, and the two clouds in soft lavender. Use smooth marker fills on the dolphins’ broad bodies, then switch to a sharp colored pencil for the thin water ripples and small flying droplets. Try making the left splash a little sunnier than the right, as if both dolphins have leapt through two different patches of ocean light.

Between two racing currents in the sunlit strait, Rune tucked a thumb-sized chip of driftwood under his fin and sprang after every splash that glittered ahead. The chip looked plain, but each notch on it marked a leap he had made on the brightest days, and Rune wanted to add one more before the tide turned silver. Beside him, Vela burst up with a clap of water. “Chase the next sparkle!” she called, and the sea answered hiss-hiss, fizz-fizz around their tails.

They leapt in zigzags, following droplets that flashed like tossed coins. Rune tapped the driftwood after each jump: one notch for the high spray, one for the curved ripple, one for the place where the water smelled cold and clean. Two puffy clouds slid overhead, and their shadows drifted across the strait. Suddenly the bright splashes and dark patches lined up below them—not random at all, but a huge arrow pointing toward a ribbon of warmer water.

Rune laughed so hard he nearly swallowed a bubble. His little tally was not counting jumps; it had been saving the shapes of a secret route. He and Vela rode the warm ribbon side by side, leaping where the arrow led, and next time you see two dolphins midair, see if you can spot the plain little chip that began with one more splash.
