Whales are mammals, not fish, so they breathe air through blowholes on top of their heads and must surface regularly. The blue whale is the largest animal known to have ever lived, even bigger than the largest dinosaurs. Humpback whales are famous for long songs that can travel through the ocean and change over time. Many large whales have baleen instead of teeth; baleen plates strain tiny animals such as krill from seawater. A humpback’s tail flukes have black-and-white patterns on the underside, and researchers use those markings much like fingerprints to tell individual whales apart.

Coloring tips

For a classic whale palette, use deep navy along the back, slate gray on the sides, soft white on the belly, pale blue for the water, teal in the shadows, and a touch of misty gray for the blowhole spray. Humpbacks can also have white flippers and speckled barnacles in tan, cream, and gray. Because whale bodies are broad and curved, try shading in long strokes from nose to tail, pressing darker near the top and lighter toward the underside to make the body feel rounded. Leave a thin white highlight along the back. For a whale-specific twist, turn the ocean around the fluke into a sunset reflection or fill the whale’s silhouette with tiny waves, krill, and starry deep-sea dots.
