Past the fizzing coral flags, Vera puffed one heart-bubble and then another. Pop-pop! The lagoon smelled salty and bright. She wanted to lead the first dash to the white scallop shell, but her fins gave tiny wiggles. “I’ll go fast…ish,” she whispered.
The heart-bubbles bobbed after her like happy kites. Vera swished left, swooped right, and reached the shell with a splashy ta-da. Then the shell clicked open.
Inside was not a pearl. It was a little crab wearing a paper crown, beating two seed pods like drums. “Surprise cheer squad!” he called. Boom-tap, boom-tap! Vera laughed so hard her next heart-bubble stuck to her cheek. Next time you spot that tiny cheek heart, you’ll know where her first brave dash began.
