Historical ninja were more often called shinobi, a Japanese word connected with stealth and endurance. They worked in feudal Japan as scouts, spies, messengers, and sometimes saboteurs, so gathering information could be just as important as fighting. Two areas, Iga and Kōka, became especially famous for families who passed down skills suited to rugged mountains and shifting alliances. The all-black outfit many people picture today was not the usual daytime disguise; shinobi might dress as farmers, monks, or traveling performers to blend in. Throwing stars, called shuriken, were real tools, but they were only one small part of a much wider kit that could include ropes, climbing aids, and smoke.

Coloring tips

For a classic ninja palette, build from matte black, charcoal gray, deep navy, indigo, muted brown, steel silver, rope tan, parchment beige, and small crimson accents for ties or clan marks. Because ninja pages often have masks, folded fabric, blades, shuriken, roof tiles, and smoke, try layering one dark color over another instead of filling everything solid black. Leave thin gray highlights along sleeves, knees, and mask edges so the pose stays readable. Use metallic pencil or a cool light blue highlight on katanas and throwing stars. For a fantasy twist, give each ninja clan its own secret color: emerald smoke for forest scouts, violet moonlight for shadow magic, or a tiny glowing symbol on the mask that reveals the mission.
