Under the moonlit garden gate, Pip held a curly scroll and waited. The paper smelled like dry leaves, and his blue scarf went flap-flap in the soft wind. He wanted the scroll to open, but it only sat in his hand like a sleepy noodle.
A leaf spun past his nose. Another tapped his boot. Pip waited some more. Then—poof! A little cloud popped out, smelling like toast, and a tiny beetle in a paper hat bowed from inside the curl. “Wrong ninja,” squeaked the beetle, “but nice patience!” Pip giggled so hard his star badge wiggled.
