Beside the river mill, a cracked gong went thunk instead of bong, and Luma carried a basket of plain metal stars to trade for help. Mist smelled like wet stone. The mill wheel creaked, creek-creak, but no one answered. Luma heard a tiny hiss from her basket and whispered, “Who’s hiding?”
She turned one star over, then another. Nothing. At last she peered through the round hole in the middle, where nobody ever thought to look. A warm blue ember blinked there, no bigger than a bean. Luma tucked it into the gong’s crack. BONG! The sound rolled kindly over every sleeping roof, warning boats away from the fog. Luma left the ember shining and slipped home with an empty basket.
