🎨 How to color it

Try soft black or navy for the ninja mask, fresh green for the bamboo stalks, and light lime for the little leaves. Use chunky crayons to fill the long bamboo trunks from top to bottom, and it is perfectly fine if color hops over the lines. Add a pale blue thought puff, or let your child make it a secret color only the ninja knows.

In the hushy bamboo hollow, Pip tucked in close and listened. Plip? Not yet. Pip wanted to hear one soft drip before he blinked, so he stayed still, still, still.

The bamboo smelled green and rainy. A leaf tickled his sleeve. Then—plip! Pip whispered, “I heard you.”

Another sound answered: tap. A tiny beetle knocked the bamboo with one shiny foot. Plip, tap. Plip, tap. Pip blinked at last, slow and happy. Next time you see his round eyes by the bamboo, can you hear the drip and the tap?
