🎨 How to color it

Color the ninja’s outfit deep charcoal with crimson flame patterns, make the swirling fire orange and gold, and shade the rune stones cool slate gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny runes, sword wrap, and headband rivets, then switch to smoother strokes on the larger robe panels. Try a warm glow around the fire hand so the nearby stones and the twisted tree catch a faint amber edge.

Under the crooked ridge tree, where the wind hissed through split bark like a secret being told, Sorin tightened the plain cord around his wrist. It was only a scrap of gray rope to anyone else, but his father had tied it there before vanishing into the ash patrol. Sorin had come to borrow one ember from the sleeping stones and light the cold beacon before moonrise.

He tapped the first rune. Nothing. He tapped the second, and the rocks gave a low hum that tickled his sandals. Then the cord warmed. A red thread appeared in it, then another, twisting like tiny flames. “You remembered him,” Sorin whispered. The stones were not sleeping at all. They had been holding every brave spark ever carried past them, waiting for someone who belonged to ask.

Sorin did not take the ember. He opened his palm and gave the cord’s warmth back. Fire circled him, bright but gentle, and the runes lifted their faces toward the night. Ever since, rune stones stand watch above ninja paths, saving sparks for those who come home to the crooked ridge tree—can you spot which marks are still humming?
