Fenn’s Three Puff Promise — Before sunrise, the training yard smelled of wet pine and cold stone. Read the full story →
Before sunrise, the training yard smelled of wet pine and cold stone. Fenn tucked three tiny smoke pellets into his sash and set himself a challenge: make one puff for courage, one for thanks, and one so funny that his two patrol friends would forget how tired their feet were. He slipped away from the warm mat room toward Torii Pass, where echoes curled between the hills like sleepy cats.
The path was not far, but it asked for things. A crow wanted the sesame cracker in Fenn’s pouch and would not stop kaw-kawing until he shared it. A muddy bank grabbed one sandal, and the wind stole the neat knot from his sleeve. By the time Fenn reached the red gate, his stomach grumbled, his toes were cold, and his pellets had gone damp. “Oh no,” he whispered.
Then Tama and Riku came puffing up the trail with Fenn’s lost sandal and a dry coal from the watch fire. Together they warmed the pellets in their palms. Pop—one cloud. Pff—two clouds. FOOM—three clouds, round and bright above the pines. The joy in Fenn’s chest grew too big to keep, so he taught them the promise. Next time you spot those three puffs over Torii Pass, listen for three friends laughing where the morning smells of wet pine and cold stone.
