🎨 How to color it

Color the parade car cherry red with navy star wheels, the USA flags red, white, and blue, and the cafe awning a sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the flag stripes, bunting triangles, and tiny fireworks stars, then switch to markers for the car’s larger panels. Try a twilight gradient behind the fireworks so the white star shapes and waving flags feel extra bright.

All afternoon, engine-drums thumped along Festival Street while Hazel rolled behind the marching band, trying to keep her spot in the Liberty Parade. Streamers snapped above the shops, popcorn butter drifted through the warm air, and every float seemed to know exactly where it belonged. Hazel only had a plain hood and a borrowed flag, and the empty spaces on her doors felt colder than shade.

At dusk, a silver spark dropped from the first firework and landed on Hazel’s fender with a tiny ting. Under the cafe awning stood a stranger no taller than a mailbox, holding a tin pail full of glowing paper stars. “You’re late,” the stranger whispered. “The parade needs a car to carry the sky down low.” Hazel’s tires hummed against the street as the pail tipped, and stars stuck to her hood, wheels, and doors like warm stickers.

When Hazel reached the crowded corner, children waved from both sidewalks, and the fireworks answered overhead with boom-boom blossoms of light. From then on, every parade car wore stars so the sky would know where to ride. Next time you see Hazel’s starry wheels and hood, can you spot the first spark that chose her?
