Monster trucks are famous for tires that are often about 66 inches tall, taller than many elementary school kids. Bigfoot, built by Bob Chandler in Missouri, is widely credited as the original monster truck and helped make car-crushing shows popular in the early 1980s. Although the bodies may look like pickup trucks, dogs, sharks, or dinosaurs, modern competition trucks usually ride on custom tubular frames with lightweight fiberglass bodies. Many have four-wheel steering, so the rear wheels can turn along with the front wheels and help the driver line up jumps in tight arenas. At events, trucks may compete in racing and freestyle, where drivers earn attention with wheelies, donuts, big air, and careful saves.

Coloring tips

Start with the monster truck palette: matte black for huge tires, charcoal gray in the tread grooves, silver or chrome for rims and suspension bars, bright red, royal blue, lime green, orange, or purple for the body, yellow-to-orange for flames, tan arena dirt, and chocolate-brown mud splatter. Because these pages often have chunky outlines and repeating tire blocks, color the body first, then shade each tread block on one lower edge to make the wheels look heavy. Add a dark oval shadow under the chassis so the truck seems lifted off the ground. For a theme-specific twist, invent a team name and paint matching decals on the doors, flags, helmets, and crushed cars.
