🎨 How to color it

Give the monster truck a cherry red body, orange flame stripes, charcoal tires, and muddy brown splashes along the river bend. Use sharp colored pencils for the tire treads and flame outlines, then switch to broader marker strokes for the truck panels and rolling hills. Try making the water darkest near the wheels and lighter as the splashes fly outward, like the truck is uncovering a hidden trail.

At the berry ford, where the water smelled like wet leaves and iron, Vera scratched a new game into the mud with one huge tire: Follow the Swirls. She only meant to circle three puddles and come back before the sun slid behind the cottonwoods. But one swirl curled the wrong way. It pointed upstream, past the safe flat stones, toward the crooked bend where reeds clicked together like whispering teeth.

Vera bumped over the bank, mud popping against her fenders. Each splash cost her a little speed, and a sharp rock nicked the painted “30” on her door. “Just one more mark,” she told the dashboard compass. The next swirl became two, then four, all twisting around a half-buried ring of blue glass sunk in the mud. When her front tires rolled through it, the river gave a low glug, and a line of tiny bubbles hurried back toward the ford.

By dusk, Vera returned with no clean wheels and no three-puddle score. Instead, she carried the game’s secret: the swirls were old road signs made by water, showing where the ford would stay shallow after rain. Next time you spot the splashes around her tires, see if you can follow the crooked clue before curiosity runs away again.
