Under the long birthday banner, Vela rolled slowly so her tall cake would not wobble. She had given herself a tiny challenge: count every candle before the music wagon played its first toot. One, two, three—she whispered over the warm sugar smell, while balloons bobbed and her big tires made a soft thump-thump on the street.
More little flames appeared in the window glass, in shiny hubcaps, even in the round eyes of the balloons. Vela counted them all and smiled, because the cake was not for the cheering trucks at the curb. It was for the night guard who swept confetti after everyone went home. “Make a wish,” Vela hummed. No one saw her leave the biggest slice by his broom, except perhaps the stars on her doors. Can you find the candles Vela counted under the long birthday banner?
