Every day after the ferry bell clanged, Pippin waddled to the sun-warmed bench by the river dock and tucked his paws under his fluff. He wanted the middle spot, the one that smelled like rope, toast crumbs, and warm wood. Until one day, a shiny pebble kept poking him. Pippin scooted left. Poke. He scooted right. Poke-poke! “Who put a mountain on my bench?” he grumbled.
Because of that, the pigeons gathered to inspect. Because of THAT, Pippin lifted one back paw with great drama—and a tiny paper ticket stuck to his pink paw bean fluttered free.
