Evergreen trees stay green in winter because their narrow, waxy needles hold moisture better than broad leaves, which is why they became a symbol of life during the cold months. Decorated Christmas trees became popular in German-speaking parts of Europe in the 1500s, often with apples, nuts, and paper ornaments. In 1848, a published image of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children around a decorated tree helped spread the custom in Britain and America. Coloring tips

Build the classic palette in layers: deep pine green for the needles, warm brown for the trunk, gold or silver for the star, ruby red and metallic gold for ornaments, soft yellow for lights, snowy white for branch tips, and bright wrapping-paper colors under the tree. Christmas tree pages usually have repeating tiers, so color each branch row from dark at the base to lighter at the tips to make the evergreen look full. Leave tiny white crescents on round baubles for shine, and repeat two or three colors along garlands so the pattern feels planned. For a theme-specific twist, turn the tree into a memory tree by giving every ornament a tiny drawing—pets, initials, snowflakes, candy canes, or the year.
