Santa’s name comes from Sinterklaas, the Dutch name for Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was a real bishop who lived in Myra, in what is now Turkey, and became famous in stories for giving help and gifts in secret. In the United States, artist Thomas Nast drew Santa for Harper’s Weekly in the 1800s and helped shape details people still recognize, including the round figure, furry suit, list, and North Pole home. Rudolph joined the Christmas cast much later: the red-nosed reindeer first appeared in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May for the Montgomery Ward department store.
Coloring tips
Santa’s classic palette starts with a bright red coat and hat, snowy white fur trim, rosy cheeks and nose, a warm skin tone, black boots and belt, and a gold buckle or sleigh bell. Use light gray or pale blue shadows along the fur cuffs and beard so the white areas do not disappear on the page.
