🎨 How to color it

Color Santa’s suit cranberry red, the starry gift wrap sky blue, the wreath pine green, and the welcome mat warm tan. Use sharp pencils for the tiny stars, wreath berries, door panels, and wood-grain lines, then fill Santa’s larger coat and boots with smoother strokes. Try making the snowy doorway pale lavender so the red suit and blue present feel extra warm inside.

The story behind this coloring page

The Mat That Said Come In — Under the front-hall lantern, Dashiell rubbed his small brass key until it smelled like pennies and pine soap. Read the full story →

Under the front-hall lantern, Dashiell rubbed his small brass key until it smelled like pennies and pine soap. He wanted the first door of the night to open without a creak, because Santa carried a box sprinkled with paper stars, and Dashiell could feel the happiness inside it thumping softly against the ribbon.

But the house was hushed. No bell rang. No voice called from the stairs. Only the wreath scratched the door in the wind: shh, shh, shh. Dashiell set his key on the bare floorboards to listen, and the key warmed under his palm. A whisper rose from it, round and bright: “Joy this big needs a word to land on.”

So Dashiell knelt and traced one word across the rug with the key’s blunt tooth. WELCOME. The letters glowed like candlelight, and Santa’s boot stepped down as if the house had finally spoken. Ever since, welcome mats keep that word by the door, saving a soft place for big joy to land—can you find where the key’s happy letters waited under the front-hall lantern?
