Steam curled from the cocoa mug with a soft puff-puff, but Vito’s tiny spoon stayed dark. He needed one cocoa spark to make the Christmas Eve drink glow for everyone. So he climbed over the warm rim, past the bobbing marshmallows, and down to the midnight pantry floor.

The tiles felt cold through his boots. Behind a striped candy cane, something squeaked, “Psst! Trade me one jingle.” A square marshmallow rolled out, wearing a dusting of sugar like snow. Vito gave the bell on his hat a tiny shake—ting! The marshmallow opened its soft middle and let out a golden cocoa spark.
