Behind the warm hearth, Tobin heard no jingle. He wanted Santa’s silver sleigh bell for the midnight song, so he tiptoed from his rug to search the parlor. The stockings swayed. The tree smelled sharp and piney. He checked under one boot, behind two round ornaments, and even beside the crackly fire. Nothing.
Then Santa winked. “Try the place that waits the quietest.” Tobin waited by the lumpy gift sack until his knees felt cold. At last, tink! A tiny sound came from deep inside, under ribbons and boxes.
