People have been making snow figures for centuries, and one of the oldest known pictures of a snowman appears in a medieval manuscript from around 1380. The classic carrot nose became popular because carrots were easy to find in winter kitchens and barns. Snowmen are not built the same way everywhere: in Japan, a yukidaruma is often made with two snowballs instead of the three commonly seen in the United States. The tallest snowwoman recognized by Guinness World Records was built in Bethel, Maine, in 2008; named Olympia, she stood 122 feet 1 inch tall and had skis for eyelashes and trees for arms.

Coloring tips

Start with the snowman’s signature palette: soft white for the body, pale blue or lavender shadows along the lower curves, charcoal black for coal eyes and buttons, bright carrot orange for the nose, warm brown for twig arms or a broom, and cheerful scarf colors like red, green, teal, or candy-cane stripes. Because snowmen are made from stacked circles, shade lightly around the edges of each snowball and leave the center bright to make the body look round. Add tiny blue-gray dots under the base for crunchy snow texture. For a theme-specific twist, turn one page into a “snowman family photo” by giving each snowman a different hat, scarf pattern, and button design.
