Inside the round glass world, Wex pressed a six-point snowflake to his belly and waited for the midnight shake. The little cottage smelled faintly of cinnamon smoke, the pine tree clicked its ornaments together, and the outside pines stood in soft white heaps. Wex wanted one thing before Christmas morning: to make the whole globe laugh so hard the snow would dance sideways.
He tried his best snowman jokes. “What do snowmen eat for lunch?” he asked. “Icebergers!” The cottage window fogged with a polite puff. The tree gave one careful jingle. Wex’s cheeks stayed pink, but his joy felt too big to keep buttoned up under his scarf.
Then a tiny snort came from below his feet. Not from the cottage. Not from the present. From under the curvy base where the big words wrapped around the front. Wex bent close and heard a squeaky voice reading the hidden underside: “MERRY CHRISTMOOSE.” A dust bunny in a paper antler hat popped out, grinning. Wex laughed first, then the tree rattled, the cottage chimney hiccuped, and the whole globe filled with fizzy, giggle-snow. Next time you spot the words on Wex’s base, dare them not to be hiding one more joke.
