Before the sun brushed the hollow, Rue tapped his carrot nose and began his little challenge: find seven heart-shapes in the hush. The snow smelled clean and cold. One heart on his hat, three down his belly, one drifting high, one tucked near a pine. “Six,” he whispered.
Then a soft plip-plip came from the firs. Snow slid from their branches, showing hearts pressed into bark, needles, and little white banks below. Rue had not placed them there. The pines had made them where he had shaded their roots all night. Rue opened his twig arms wide, counting no more. Next time you spot the hearts around him, can you find the one the trees gave back?
