Behind the equipment shed, Theo tapped three balls. Thump, thump, THOOM. He wanted the lightest one for practice, the one that would pop off his toe like toast. But under the lowest shelf, something sniffed: a tiny field mouse with whiskers dusty from chalk.
“Psst,” said the mouse. “That big ball plugs my doorway.” Theo looked at the giant ball. It smelled like rubber and rain. He pushed. He puffed. His arms felt like noodles, but he rolled it out, lifted it high, and carried it back to the field instead of the easy ball. Nobody clapped. Nobody saw. Still, the mouse’s doorway was open, and Theo felt taller than his number 8. If you spot the huge ball over his head, keep the secret with him.
