🎨 How to color it

Color the referee’s jersey bright yellow, his shorts and socks black, the whistle silver, and the assistant flag with orange and red triangles. Use sharp colored pencils for the shirt folds, pocket edges, laces, and the thin center-circle lines so the details stay crisp. Try a pale green field with a slightly darker center circle, making the yellow referee shirt pop right in the middle.

Every day after school, Jules taped paper triangles to a broom handle behind Section C and practiced calling imaginary throw-ins. The empty stadium smelled like dust, sun-warmed seats, and old pretzels. He wanted to make a real referee flag with his own hands before Saturday’s junior match, but his first three flags flopped like tired pancakes.

Until one day, a green parrot swooped from the scoreboard, snatched the practice whistle, and shrieked, “Fweeee!” Because of that, Jules’s cardboard flag became the only signal left. Because of that, when the parrot hopped onto the goal net and started awarding points to popcorn bags, Jules had to raise his wobbly flag straight up, one finger pointing to the sky. “That’s not a goal, feather-brain!” he called, laughing.

Finally, he twisted wire from a broken seat tag through the flag’s edge, making it snap sharp instead of sag. The parrot dropped the whistle with a clink and bowed like a tiny, guilty referee. Saturday, Jules carried his handmade flag to midfield, proud of every crooked stripe; if you spot the raised finger and tucked flag, you’ve found the moment his tired pancake became official.
