Every day after practice, Ollie tapped the same three lockers with his left cleat: clank, clank, clonk. He had made himself a secret challenge—kick the ball into the towel bin from the bench without anyone seeing. The problem was the locker bay smelled like wet socks and rubber, and Coach Vega’s clipboard ears heard everything.
Until one day, Ollie nudged the ball with his brave-left foot, and his shin guard slid out of his bag like a tiny sled. Because of that, the ball bumped the guard, the guard smacked a cleat, and the cleat spun a shoelace into a wild loop. Because of THAT, the whole pile skittered across the floor, squeak-thump-whap, straight toward Coach’s office.
Ollie swallowed a laugh and a gulp at the same time. “Please don’t be loud,” he whispered, then stepped out and stopped the runaway mess with one toe. The ball popped neatly into the towel bin. Coach Vega peeked out, sniffed the socky air, and said, “Nice save.” Next time you spot the curved kick marks, you’ll know where the clank, clank, clonk began.
