At the meadow corner, Romy tucked one tiny cookie crumb into the hem of his number 10 shirt. It smelled like cinnamon and Saturday. He tapped the soccer ball with his toes: thump, thump, squeak. The wavy flag flapped as if it were laughing with him.

Romy did not eat the crumb. He saved it for the perfect kick, the one that made the grass hum. Then a cloud above him sneezed, “Pip!” Three little cloud mice peeked out, whiskers dusty with sugar. “That’s our doorbell crumb,” said the smallest mouse.
