Before the whistle at Riverside Pitch, Tavi rubbed blue chalk onto a strip of old sailcloth. He wanted his team’s first flag to flap above the supporters, not hang crooked and plain. The cloth smelled of river salt and glue, and his fingers stuck together as he painted one word: GOAL.
But the flag needed a cord. Tavi searched under benches, behind the water cart, even inside his cleats. Nothing. Then, while chasing a loose ball, he heard a tiny clink from the goal net. Tucked inside the bottom square was a bright brass ring and a coil of silver string, hidden where no one thought to look.
“Mine to make,” Tavi whispered. He tied the sailcloth high, and when his shot skimmed the grass into the net, the new flag snapped open with a crack like thunder.
