Every afternoon, Nico counted the coach’s arrows before scrimmage: one curling left, one cutting right, one straight as a whistle. He wanted to know where the missing pass went, because the chalk always smelled dusty and new, like rain on stone, and the ball seemed to wait for an answer.
Until one day, the coach’s pencil snapped. Because of that, the clipboard tilted in his hands, and Nico saw a tiny fifth arrow tucked beneath the metal clip where nobody ever looked. Because of that, he traced it past the drawn goal, past the box, to a dot no player had stood on.
