Every night, Bramble packed snow into a heart mold, pressed twig curls along the rim, and polished the center until it squeaked under his mitten. He meant to hang the badge at the forest maker fair, where even the icicles wore ribbons. Until one night, a pine marten in stolen spectacles popped from the woodpile, sniffed the gluey sap, and announced, “Needs drama.”
Because of that, Bramble chased him through balsam shadows while the marten stamped paw prints across the wet heart. Because of that, the ruined surface bloomed with loops, dots, and wild little tracks more lively than Bramble’s careful plan. Finally, laughing frost from his scarf, Bramble kept every mark and added his own curled border by moonlight. At dawn, the badge squeaked under his mitten, proudly imperfect and entirely his own.
