Every night, Quill crossed the observatory roof counting weather vanes and pretending the moon was not staring back. Then he invented Moon-Wobble: flap twice, grin hard, and make the moon’s shadow jiggle across the brass telescope. Because the astronomers snorted cocoa through their noses, the gargoyles demanded turns; because the gargoyles over-flapped, clouds spun like whipped cream and stars seemed to hiccup. Finally Quill rang the roof bell and taught everyone the rules, his joy too enormous for one pair of wings, while the moon kept staring back.
