🎨 How to color it

Layer the unicorn in pearl gray and soft ivory, make the braided mane deep teal, and color the crescent arch and corner knots in aged gold with moss-green vine curls. Use sharp colored pencils and work one knot strand at a time, following each over-under path before moving to the next ribbon. For a quiet glow, shade the empty oval behind the unicorn from pale moon blue at the top to misty lavender near the hooves.

Under the hush of an old grove, Thalen had given himself a private test: follow one silver thread from its first curl to its last without lifting his gaze. It sounded simple, which is how the best secrets disguise themselves. He left his warm fern hollow at moonrise, carrying only a narrow ribbon from his mane and the smell of rain-dark bark in his nostrils. At the knot arch, every line ducked, crossed, and vanished. “Not yet,” he whispered when the owls began their soft wooden calls.

The thread demanded payment in minutes. Dew soaked his fetlocks; a thorn caught his ribbon; the moon slid behind leaves and made the silver go dull. Thalen tied the ribbon to the lowest twist so he would not hurry past it, then waited. Slowly, where he had expected an ending, the path turned back toward him, bright as a held breath. He returned to the fern hollow with no ribbon, but with the grove’s patient pattern still shining in his eyes, one silver thread from its first curl to its last.
