The word “ghost” comes from Old English gāst, meaning a spirit or soul. During Samhain, a Celtic festival held around November 1, people believed spirits could be near the living; that idea helped shape later Halloween customs. The classic white-sheet ghost echoes old burial shrouds, the plain cloths once used to wrap bodies. Casper the Friendly Ghost made his screen debut in the 1945 animated short The Friendly Ghost and became one of the best-known friendly spirits in cartoons. Coloring tips
