🎨 How to color it

Color the little ghost a pale blue-white, the owl warm chestnut and gold, the bare tree trunks soft gray-brown, and the crescent moon buttery yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many twiggy branches, then switch to light side-strokes for the open sky between the stars. Try making the winding path fade from cool lavender in the distance to mossy green near the ghost’s floating hem.

Under the tucked-up roots of a silver birch, Nellie kept a pebble for every brave thing she had not done yet. She wanted one more pebble tonight: the Star-Seven pebble, earned by floating past the bend alone and counting seven quiet stars. The woods smelled of damp leaves and old bark. “Just to the owl branch,” she whispered, and slipped out where the path curled pale as thread.

The first star was easy. The second winked between black twigs. At the third, burrs caught the ribbon on Nellie’s sleeve, and a soft rip made her stop. Above her, an owl clicked his beak like two tiny stones. “Trade me that loose ribbon,” he said, “and I’ll turn my head toward each hidden star.” Nellie’s middle felt fizzy, but she nodded. One by one, the owl showed her seven small lights.

She came home without the ribbon, carrying no Star-Seven pebble at all. Instead, she tucked the owl’s fallen feather beside her bed, soft as moon-mist. Next time the path curls pale as thread, can you spot the owl who helped Nellie count the quiet stars?
