Under the cold arch, Rowan rubbed soot from his palms and wished the cemetery gate would close with a latch he had shaped himself. He drifted from his usual niche to the ruined vestry, where iron smelled of rain and old pennies, and met a hedgehog-sized mason beetle rolling a bead of molten moonlight. “Trade me one memory of warmth,” it clicked, and Rowan gave the feel of sun on stone. Together they hammered a rose-shaped catch, imperfect and bright. Back at the gate, its small click sounded handmade, and the cold arch felt like home.
