It had no door now, only a cool weight in his palm and a faint scent of rain trapped in its facets. Below him, the house settled with small wooden sighs, and every dark window waited as if holding its breath.

Moonlight arrived slowly, pouring over the roofs in silver sheets. Ivar lifted the doorknob to admire the familiar cloudy center, but tonight the glass answered: a circle of gold opened inside it, then another, and another, like a quiet sun learning to speak. The windows did not need opening; they were listening. Each pane caught a splinter of light and passed it on, tower to tower, until the whole house glittered in colors Ivar had never owned alone.
