Between us, the moon conservatory used to be very strict: vines climbed only upward, stars stayed pinned, and ghosts kept their hands folded. Maelis wanted one private rule of her own, so she invented Catch-the-Quiet, a game of touching each pale star-mark before the silver scent of night-bloom faded. The last mark appeared beyond the trellis, where no ghost had reached before. Her fingers shook; her sleeve drifted after them, thin as breath on glass. “Just one,” she whispered. When she touched it, the vines curled around that brave ribbon of cloth and learned to follow. Ever since, ghosts wear trailing sleeves, so courage has something beautiful to hold.
