Under the glasshouse ribs, Cyril tapped his spoon against a chilled tin and invented a game: follow the longest cream curl without lifting your eyes, and the top strawberry would be his. The night smelled of wet leaves and sugar. The curl led away from his favorite stool, past lilies with pollen like gold dust, to a locked side door breathing cold air through its keyhole. He slid his brass tasting token underneath; it clicked, vanished, and the door opened.
Beyond it, among poppies silvered by moonlight, waited a small empty saucer marked with the same curling line. Cyril understood the rule he had not written. He set down the best scoop, tucked the strawberry on top, and walked back with sticky fingers and no prize, feeling oddly full. By morning, only a ruby stain remained on the saucer, and under his tin lay a new token, cold as a secret, under the glasshouse ribs.
