🎨 How to color it

Layer sea-glass teal on the mermaid’s tail scales, pearl pink on her shell crown and scepter, sandy gold on the castle towers, and coral red through the branching reef border. Use sharp colored pencils for the small tail scales, bead necklace, bubbles, and window panes, then save markers for the larger kelp leaves and arch bands. For a stained-glass glow, shade each arch segment from darker outer edges toward a pale center, as if light is passing through the reef.

Every evening, Ondine polished the shell on her scepter and dared herself to improve one royal ceremony without anyone noticing. Usually she tilted a banner into a prettier current or taught the fountain bubbles to pop in rhythm. Until one day, the citadel trumpeter came down with a hiccup so loud it tasted of pepper and startled three dignified cod into swimming backward.

Because of that, Ondine stole the opening fanfare and hid it inside her shell. Because of that, every time the shell sighed, the castle gates swung early for late servants, tired guards, and one octopus carrying soup in eight bowls. Finally, when the court applauded the “excellent silence,” Ondine only twirled her scepter, innocent as moonlight, while the last rescued bowl chimed softly against stone.
