Every day, Nixie timed the reef currents by braiding her long hair with her friend Zera’s, one twist for slow water, two twists for fast. The braid tugged like a living rope, and the coral tunnels hummed with swish-swish, click-click shrimp. Nixie wanted a game big enough for everyone, so she invented Tangle-Tide: follow the braid, tag a shell, and trade places before the bubbles popped.
Until one day, the game worked too well. A laughing school of fish copied the braid’s loops, darting over, under, over, under, until the racers in the reef paths all turned the wrong way. Because of that, turtle carts bumped into sponge stalls, and because of that, a cloud of cinnamon-smelling red algae burst loose and tickled every nose.
Nixie grabbed Zera’s hand. “Make the braid a bridge!” Together they lifted their woven hair high, then dipped it low, marking one bright path through the fizzing water. Fish flashed after it. Turtles rolled through. Even the algae cloud streamed along like a parade scarf. The joy was too huge to keep in one game, so Nixie shouted the rules to the whole reef—and next time you spot their joined braid, see if you can trace the first swish-swish of Tangle-Tide.
