🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail seafoam green, her starfish hair clip coral orange, the smiling whale soft blue-gray, and the little fish golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the tail scales, hair ribbons, bubble rings, and whale spots so the small curved details stay crisp. Try making the top waves fade from turquoise to deep blue, as if sunlight is slipping away above their secret meeting.

Under the tide meadow, Tindra chased one runaway question: where did the sea keep its oldest sound? She had borrowed a shell-cup to catch it, but the cup only tasted of salt and clicked against her palm. Then the water trembled—hummmm—and a young whale rose from behind the eelgrass, smiling as if he had been expecting her.

“Don’t tell the crabs,” he whispered, “but I swallowed a thunder-pebble.” His nose twitched. Puh! A perfect ring of bubbles rolled out, tickling Tindra’s cheeks and spinning around her like a silver hoop. Inside it, she heard a tiny boom, then a laugh, then another puh-puh-puh as more rings curled through the water.

Tindra did not catch the oldest sound in her shell-cup. She asked a better question: could every whale sneeze a doorway for sound? The young whale practiced until bubble circles floated behind him in shining paths, and ever since, whales draw rings when their songs need somewhere to travel. If you spot the round bubbles near the smiling whale, keep the secret: one of them may still be carrying a thunder-pebble’s giggle.
